Barcelona, January 16 2025 – As part of the groundbreaking initiatives led by the Fractus-UPC Deep Tech Hub, Fractus is proud to support the talented student engineers of the BCN eMotorsport team from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC). This extraordinary team, made up of students from ETSEIB and ETSETB, is developing the CAT17x, an innovative electric and autonomous vehicle, to compete in Formula Student 2025 – the world’s premier university motorsport competition.
Formula Student is much more than a race; it’s a celebration of engineering, creativity, and perseverance. Teams from across the globe design, build, and test Formula 1-style cars, combining technical excellence with innovative thinking. This aligns perfectly with Fractus’s mission to foster young talent and drive technological progress.
Dr. Carmen Borja, CTO of Fractus, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for this initiative: “At Fractus, we are deeply committed to empowering the next generation of innovators. Supporting the BCN eMotorsport team through the Fractus-UPC Deep Tech Hub underscores our dedication to projects that blend creativity, cutting-edge engineering, and sustainability. It is an honor to nurture the talent and ambition that distinguish both the UPC and Formula Student.”

The BCN eMotorsport team led by Albert del Rio, Michael Cabrera and Adrià Martínez recently unveiled their plans for the CAT17x at the Parc del Fòrum, showcasing a commitment to excellence that has defined their journey since 2007. From pioneering Spain’s first combustion and electric single-seaters to winning accolades with autonomous vehicles, these students are redefining possibilities in automotive engineering. Their latest vehicle builds on the success of its predecessor, the CAT16x, which won the autonomous mode competition at Formula Student Spain 2023.
This collaboration between Fractus and BCN eMotorsport is about more than winning competitions; it’s about inspiring the community, showcasing the potential of young minds, and paving the way for sustainable innovations in mobility. Events like these demonstrate how industry and academia can unite to achieve transformative goals.
With over 40 years of history, Formula Student remains a beacon of opportunity for engineering students worldwide. As BCN eMotorsport gears up for the 2025 season, they represent not just Catalonia but the spirit of innovation and determination shared by all students driven to make an impact.
Fractus invites everyone to follow the incredible journey of the BCN eMotorsport team as they continue to break barriers and inspire the next generation of engineers.
